Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion or The “Lunchtime Peel”

Time. Who has enough of it? In today’s hectic-paced world many women and men simply do not have the time to take care of their skin the way they would like to. The wind, sun, aging, acne and hormones have taken their toll, and that once smooth, tight face is beginning to look rough, spotted, and slightly wrinkled. Voila! The lunchtime peel! A delightful experience one can fit into a lunchtime break, with virtually no down-time or recovery hassles.

What is a “lunchtime peel”? What we are referring to is actually called “microdermabrasion”. Microdermabrasion is a simple “peel” of the skin. It removes layers of dead and dying skin cells, exposing the fresher and more youthful layers underneath. Repeated on a regular schedule, the process can improve the fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth, and on the cheeks. Pigmented areas can achieve lightening, and acne scars can be improved and softened. This “lunchtime mechanical peel” is not as potent as chemical peels such as TCA (trichloroacetic acid) or phenol. It is not nearly as deep, effective or long-lasting as laser resurfacing using CO2 laser energy. But the recovery is rapid (the redness lasts only a few minutes to an hour), and the immediate result is a smooth feel to the skin. It can also be used on many areas of the body that cannot be treated by either laser or chemical peels. Any area of the body can be treated by microdermabrasion, but the most common areas are the face, neck, upper chest, hands, arms and legs.

Although a single treatment will leave your skin rejuvenated and smooth, multiple treatments are necessary to achieve the optimal wrinkle and pigmentation improvement. Usually, 10-12 treatments are recommended, but as few as 6 may be enough. Maintenance treatments are usually needed every few months.

What are the risks? Risks are few. Redness, tightness, peeling, skin breakouts are a few. Herpes cold sores may be brought on.

How is the treatment given? The treatments are given in our Bountiful location inside our Skin Essentials Medi-spa. You will find that this location is a quiet atmosphere conducive to your relaxation and enjoyment. Debra, our office aesthetician, will perform the treatment. The microdermabrasion is accomplished by literally “sand-blasting” the tissue away. The machine is small, and non-threatening. The skin is pre-treated with cleansers, then microdermabraded, and finally treated with moisturizers to complete the session. Microdermabrasion is a regulated treatment in most states, including Utah. Physician supervision is required, although the physician need not be always present. Ask for details of this skin-care treatment, then try it-you’ll like it!

The cost of a Microdermabrasion is $50
