Breast Reduction

If you are a woman with overly large breasts, breast reduction surgery can be a tremendously life enhancing option. Having the procedure will give you far more than just smaller, firmer breasts. You’ll also get significant relief from many physical and emotional discomforts, a new sense of freedom in your exercise and physical activity, and the ability to wear a greater variety of clothing styles. In fact, of all the procedures that Dr. Sellers performs, breast reduction ranks among the highest in patient satisfaction.

Breast reduction, also called reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure that removes excess breast tissue and skin, making your breasts more proportional to the rest of your body. The areola ( the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) is reduced in size, and the nipple repositioned to a more natural level.

When you come in for a consultation, Dr. Sellers will design your reduction based on the size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin and the position of your nipples. Measurements and photographs are taken for your medical record. Most insurance companies will pay for breast reduction to relieve medical symptoms; however, coverage may depend on removing a pre-determined amount of breast tissue.  A letter of predetermination may be required by your insurance company prior to surgery. Our staff will help you with insurance matters related to the procedure. If you are needing a purely cosmetic change in your breast size and shape you must pay for the procedure yourself. We will help  make these determinations.

Usually there are three incisions; one around the areola (the dark skin around the nipple), one vertically from the nipple to the crease underneath the breast, and the third is horizontally below the breasts.

Breast reduction surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure at the hospital or surgical center. You will be encouraged to be out of bed soon after surgery to aid in recovery. Pain is managed with medication prescribed. You may return to work within 1-2 weeks. Although the scars are permanent, they will fade over time. Most women are thrilled with their new contour and also with the physical relief they get from the back and neck pain and headaches associated with overly large breasts.

Your specific questions are best answered in a personal consultation with Dr. Sellers and his staff, however, please feel free to call us with any questions!
